welcome TO marin-tmj.com

A website for Helping People Who Are Suffering from Headaches and Neck Aches  - or Jaw Pain and Dysfunction - caused by Temporomandibular Disorders

What are Temporomandibular Disorders?

TMD's are a collection of wide ranging symptoms, and other issues, that are often overlooked by health care providers - and the public as well - because they don't understand the role and significance that the human jaw plays in creating them

If this information is new to you...

and you're wondering if you might have a TM Disorder that could be causing your particular problem, click the box below to see its top 12 signs and symptoms and discover how many may apply you.

TOP 12 SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TM DISORDER SYNDROME

WHO WE ARE...

MarinTMJ is owned and operated by Dennis D. Stuart, DDS

Dr. Stuart is a general dentist with an extensive background in the diagnosis and treatment of bite related TMD problems

He is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and is a fellow at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI)

WHAT WE DO...

WE TREAT TM DISORDERS BY USING SCIENCE-BASED PHYSIOLOGIC METHODS

Our approach to diagnosis and treatment is founded upon the principles and philosophy of Neuromuscular Dentistry

NMD - or Physiologic Dentistry as it's now called - is based on science and technology

"If you can measure it, it's a fact. If not, it's an opinion"

- Bernard Janklesen DDS, founding father of NMD - 1968

THE TECHNOLOGY WE USE TO MEASURE PHYSIOLOGY

JAW TRACKING

Jaw Tracking is a high tech tool that allows us to observe and record any or all movements that a jaw can make during function.

High magnification allows us to zoom in, observe, and analyze the nature of these motions to get an accurate picture of how the jaw is working

SURFACE EMGS

By taping band-aid size sensors on key pairs of jaw muscles, we can measure their levels of tension and determine which are being overworked in the course of the daily activities of speaking, chewing and swallowing

EMG readings can also tell us if the bite is causing the jaw to be misaligned and to what degree and directions

TENS THERAPY

TENS - which stands for transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation - can best be described as "Electronic Massage"

While it doesn't feel as soothing as the touch of the human hand, science has shown it to be far superior in its ability to relax the muscles of the head & neck

T-SCAN BITE TECH

Most dental patients are familiar with the marking paper that dentists put between their teeth to check the bite on new fillings and crowns

Unfortunately, these marking films can not quantify the force being applied to the teeth - nor the timing (sequence) of which teeth hit when and where

The T-Scan can!  It graphically records a high speed movie which shows all teeth contacts as the lower jaw closes into the bite

THE NATURE OF PAIN & HOW IT RELATES TO TM DISORDERS

The main goal of this website is to help enlighten and educate our visitors - with new (and accurate) information about the important role that the human jaw plays in regards to the overall health and function of the human body

In the video below, Dr. Curtis Westersund presents an interesting explanation on how a person's bite influences and relates to the energy demands, structual balance and overall function of the whole body

BEWARE: This video is about 10 minutes long. If you're pressed for time, you might want to put it off until later. But, if you suffer from symptoms of TMD, watch it when you can because the information is quite enlightening

THE KEY TAKE AWAY FROM THIS VIDEO IS THAT:  THE BIO-MACHINE THAT WE CALL THE HUMAN BODY...

has evolved to maintain an upright balanced stance which must resist the forces of gravity - by (hopefully) expending as little energy as is necessary to do so. The importance of this can not be overstated.

As cited in the video, in 1981, noted Brain Research Scientist, Dr. Roger Sperry,  received the Nobel Prize for his discovery that "Better than 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body in its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy available for thinking, metabolism and healing".

When it comes to mechanical distortions of the human skeleton, the lower jaw plays a key role in head balance - and the alignment of the skeletal chain (spinal column) below it.

OUR PREFERRED CLINICAL APPROACH TO TREATMENT

Having spent decades involved in the fields of occlusion, pain and TMD, Dr. Stuart has witnessed and benefited from the growth in technologies first hand.

Some of these instruments began over 40 years ago. Others are somewhat new. But the one thing they share in common is that - they all continue to evolve!

THE T-SCAN BITE ANALYSIS SYSTEM IS NOW

OUR PREFERRED APPROACH TO TREATMENT

- BUT IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY -

THE REASON: we (and our patients) prefer the Tek-Scan Treatment System method is - because it's a definitive procedure (micro bite adjustments done on the teeth) - that often eliminates or minimizes the need for patients to wear removable orthopedic bite appliances

IT'S ALL ABOUT MUSCLES

Whether it's T-Scan Bite Adjustments or the use of Orthopedic Appliances (some cases necessitate them), the GOAL OF OUR TREATMENT APPROACH is to create happy and healthy muscles in the head and neck areas

FACTOID: it's been shown that muscles account for the vast majority (80%) of all pain that people suffer and seek relief for
